The co-founders of the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company with Jerry Greenfield, announced how he plans to personally create this new flavor as part of an individual series highlighting issues the company has been barred from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators versus Parent Company

This latest announcement deepens the ongoing disagreement among the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.

The co-founders have claimed that the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Sorbet as a Symbol for Support

Mr. Cohen announced via an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions for the product's name plus additional components.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”

The watermelon has emerged as a symbol of support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, which match those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement plus Current Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first established in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".

Management Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions

The founder revealed how he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that the company was prevented from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.

This development follows partner Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company recently, following many years of involvement, citing concerns regarding how the company's autonomy was compromised after Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.

Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the values which established its foundation while upholding for decades," he told journalists.
