Disputed US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation Ends Humanitarian Work

The debated, United States and Israel-funded Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) declares it is winding down its aid operations in the Palestinian territory, subsequent to approximately 180 days.

The organisation had previously halted its several relief locations in Gaza following the truce agreement between Hamas and Israel came into force recently.

The foundation sought to circumvent United Nations channels as the chief distributor of relief to Palestinian residents.

UN and other aid agencies would not collaborate with its approach, claiming it was questionable and hazardous.

Hundreds of Palestinians were killed while attempting to obtain sustenance amid disorderly situations near the organization's distribution points, mainly through Israeli military action, based on UN documentation.

Israeli authorities stated its forces fired warning shots.

Program Termination

The foundation announced on recently that it was concluding activities now because of the "satisfactory fulfillment of its humanitarian effort", with a total of three million packages containing the amounting to in excess of 187 million sustenance units provided to residents.

The organization's top administrator, Jon Acree, further mentioned the American-directed Civil-Military Coordination Center - which has been established to help carry out the American administration's Gaza initiative - would be "implementing and enlarging the system the foundation tested".

"The organization's system, in which Palestinian factions were unable to divert and benefit from humanitarian assistance, played a huge role in convincing militant groups to participate and securing a halt in hostilities."

Reactions and Responses

Hamas - which denies stealing aid - approved the termination of the humanitarian foundation, according to reports.

A representative of said GHF should be made responsible for the damage it inflicted to Palestinians.

"We call upon all international human rights organisations to make certain that consequences are faced after resulting in fatalities and harm of numerous Palestinians and concealing the nutritional restriction approach employed by the Israel's administration."

Organization Timeline

The organization commenced activities in Gaza on May 26th, a short period subsequent to the Israeli government had moderately reduced a comprehensive closure on aid and commercial deliveries to Gaza that continued for 77 days and caused severe shortages of essential supplies.

Three months later, a food crisis was announced in Gaza City.

The GHF's food distribution sites in southern and central Gaza were managed by US private security contractors and situated within Israeli military zones.

Humanitarian Concerns

International organizations and their affiliates said the approach breached the fundamental humanitarian principles of non-partisanship, even-handedness and self-determination, and that guiding distressed residents into military-controlled areas was intrinsically hazardous.

International human rights monitoring body stated it documented the killing of at least 859 Palestinians trying to acquire sustenance in the proximity to foundation locations between late May through end of July.

An additional 514 individuals were lost their lives close to the courses followed by international humanitarian deliveries, it also mentioned.

The majority of these individuals were lost their lives due to the Israel's armed forces, based on the agency's reports.

Conflicting Accounts

Israel's armed services stated its troops had released alerting fire at people who approached them in a "threatening" way.

The GHF said there were no shooting events at the aid sites and claimed the international organization of using "inaccurate and deceptive" data from the Palestinian health authority administered by Hamas.

Future Implications

The GHF's future had been uncertain since Palestinian factions and Israeli authorities consented a halt in hostilities arrangement to carry out the initial stage of the United States' reconciliation proposal.

The agreement stated relief provision would take place "absent meddling from the two parties through the UN organizations and their partners, and the humanitarian medical organization, in combination with other international institutions not associated in any manner" with Palestinian factions and Israeli authorities.

International organization official Stephane Dujarric stated recently that the foundation's closure would have "no impact" on its work "because we never worked with them".

He also said that while more aid was getting into Gaza since the halt in hostilities began on early October, it was "not enough to meet all the needs" of the 2.1 million residents.
