Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 people lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
