Larry Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board

Corporate Departure
Summers stated he would retreat from public duties after House committee disclosed his repeated correspondence with Epstein

One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is exiting the board at OpenAI, just days after a batch of emails between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

Summers stated in a release that he was "thankful for the chance to have served, excited about the potential of the organization, and eagerly await observing their advancement".

The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on Monday that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.

Message Exchange

The newly public messages showed that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 apprehension for accused human trafficking of minors.

In additional comments, the AI firm stated it understood the economist's decision to step down.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he offered to the Board," the organization stated.

Congressional Action

This news follows after both chambers of the US legislature voted on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would compel the US justice department to disclose its files on Epstein.

The measure will then move to the administration of US President Donald Trump for approval. Trump has indicated he intends to endorse the legislation, after modifying his stance on the issue following objections from his supporters.

Correspondence Findings

A batch of financier-linked emails released by the House Oversight Committee recently referenced multiple well-known personalities in the financier's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those people.

The messages showed that the economist and the financier often met for meals, with the billionaire often attempting to connect Summers to influential global figures.

Personal Accountability

After the messages were released with the general audience, Summers said he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised judgment to continue interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he desired "to restore confidence and repair bonds with the persons nearest to me".

Professional History

Summers served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; acting as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.

He led the university from five years and is still a professor there. When declaring his departure from public duties previously on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy institute in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was ceased to be connected with the group.

He became part of the directorate of the technology firm, which develops ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
