Arrangements to hold Pride-focused celebrations throughout the city amid the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament will continue unabated, despite the Egyptian and Iranian football federations raised objections regarding a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. These events will take place around the Group G fixture featuring Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Additionally, the tournament's governing body has a policy allowing rainbow flags inside the stadium.
“In our role as hosts, our primary task is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of Seattle Stadium,” said the vice-president of communications.
Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, and in Egypt, morality laws are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association stated it did not want to be linked to celebrations that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “objections against the issue.”
Fifa maintains operational control of stadiums on matchdays. Although it prohibits political signage with political messages, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was in effect at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.
The Pacific Northwest is home to one of the nation’s largest Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities representing all nations. “Our commitment is to ensuring everyone experience the hospitality, dignity, and respect that defines our region,” the statement added.
