The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
