Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
On the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
